MEET THE COACHES!

Head Coach Gary Childress - Gary, a native of Granby, earned his Bachelor’s degree from theUniversity of Northern Colorado and his Master’s from Lesley College. CoachChildress enters his fourth season at Cherokee Trail.  This will be his 42nd  year of coaching basketball, 41 as a headcoach at the high school level, and one (1997-98) as an assistant at Colorado MesaCollege.  Other than Cherokee Trail,Gary’s head coaching stints include Limon (2 years), Yuma (9 years), Ferndale,Washington (2 years), Palisade (5 years), Grandview (16 years) and Vista Peak(3 years).  Coach Childress’ teams havemade eight “Great Eight” State Tournament trips with five of those (81’, 90’,03’, 05’ and 06’) going to the “Final Four”. Coach Childress retired from teaching in the spring of 2011 as aphysical educator at GHS where his wife Patty retired as a teacher and HeadVolleyball Coach in 2016. The couple has two sons, Spencer (34) a counselor atOverland High School and Christian (31) who works for Alaska Airlines in Seattle.

Junior Varsity Coach Devin Gonzales

Devin is in his third season on the Cougars staff, coachingthe freshmen two years ago and then the junior varsity last year.  Devin helps in many aspects of the program atevery level.  Coach Gonzales graduatedfrom Fairview High School before going on to continue his academic andbasketball career at Black Hills State University, where he earned a Bachelor’sDegree in Business Administration. Following his graduation he remained in Spearfish to work as a graduateassistant while working on his Master’s. Devin has assisted at the college level as the top assistant atDickenson (ND) State for four years and at Eastern (Wyo) College.

Varsity/JV Assistant Coach Manchell Jackson

A 2007 Cherokee Trail Graduate,Manchell was a 3 sport letterman (Football,Basketball,Track) and is a CherokeeTrail Wall Of Famer.  Coach Jackson worksat CT as a Para Educator in Special Education ILC, a position he has held for 5years.  He is also in his 5th yearas Cherokee Trail assistant basketball coach and has assisted in football at CTfor 6 years.  He has a hand in many ofthe behind the scenes operations of the Cougar Basketball Program.

Sophomore Coach Marcus Johnson

As a personaltrainer, coach and mentor with a proven background in leadership, Coach Johnsonis in his 1st year as an assistant at Cherokee Trail.  He has great optimism in cultivating aculture of competitiveness and hard work. His passion for basketball and playerdevelopment reflects the professionalism of a Cherokee Trail basketball coach.After spending 12 years serving in the United States Air Force, active and reserve,Coach Marcus is bringing additional leadership experience as a decoratedAirmen.  He is driven by education,student athletics and developing a winning culture.  Although his education can be described asnon-traditional, he has two associate degrees, one in communication, another inmilitary technologies. With previous undergraduate experience he is workingtowards a bachelors in Project Management. In addition to formal education andtraining, his experience includes being a nationally certified coach throughNFHS

Freshman Coach Richard Hyslop

Richard is in his 1st year as a Coach for the Cougars. He’sa native of Virginia and currently works as a system analyst for LockheedMartin, while also being a retired United States Air Force veteran, with 20years of global service. Throughout his travels, he’s coached at the middle andhigh school level in football and basketball programs in Florida and NorthCarolina. In addition, Richard has devoted his time to successfully standing upcompetitive club and AAU feeder teams during his time coaching. He holds adegree in Information Systems and Humanities from the University of MarylandUniversity College. Richard’s passion and devotion to character development,processes, and discipline is what makes him successful on and off the court.
